CWI – Cold Water Immersion and Ice Baths – FAQ’s

What ice baths do you use and what are the temperatures?
  • Ice4Life uses the Odin Pro ice baths – suitable for 1 or 2 people – believed to be one of the world’s best Ice Baths, proudly made in Australia.
  • Ice baths, aka cold therapy, utilises CWI (cold water immersion) up to the neck and over the shoulders in cold water.
  • Ice4Life offers two baths.
  • No.1 is set at 8 to 12 degrees C.
  • No.2 is set to 0 to 4 degrees C.
  • Check on booking to ensure your ice bath of choice.
How often should I use an ice bath and for how long?
  • This is an individual ever changing personal choice, motivated by your health and wellness goals and your fitness level at the time of use.
  • A good starting point is 2-3 times per week to gauge the benefits and see how good you feel.
  • Daily use is commonplace, but listening to your own body is critical to avoid excessive cold exposure and the harms thereof.
  • Recommended sessions are up to 6mins maximum depending on tolerance and temperature.
  • 1min is a recommended starting point but can vary depending on tolerance and temperature.
  • Usage is flexible and should be individually fine-tuned, specific to your health goals and tolerance.
  • Like exercise, using ice baths in your weekly routine may provide the best results.
Are ice baths safe? Who should avoid participating?

Ice baths and CWI can be uncomfortable in the initial stages, but when used safely and responsibly, they are safe for most individuals.

People with circulatory conditions, and people with cold tolerance conditions or concerns should consult a doctor prior to attempting an ice bath.

Ice baths are to be avoided by people with heart conditions, Raynaud’s syndrome, hypothermia, open wounds/sores, pregnant women and those who are currently sick.

Ice baths and CWI have numerous benefits but are not an entertainment tool, so please consult with your doctor, medical professional and/or healthcare provider for advice prior to participation, especially if you have medical concerns.

Please also refer to terms and conditions.

What are the benefits of ice baths and CWI?
  • Reduced inflammation and muscle soreness, improved circulation, improved immune system function.
  • Improved mental health due to increased endorphins and norepinephrine.
  • Improvement in mood, positivity, focus, energy, vigor, clarity and self-esteem due to CWI activating the sympathetic nervous system which controls our ‘fight or flight’ response.
  • Increased resilience to stress due to decreasing cortisol levels.
  • Can reduce negative thoughts and emotions such as depression, anger, fatigue, tension and confusion.

CWI can trigger the release of cold shock proteins, known as hormesis. Hormesis is a level of stress that is just enough to challenge our body ‘s homeostasis and trigger tolerable adaptions.

These adaptions are linked to increased stress tolerance, injury recovery and increased longevity.

Cold shock proteins may also promote muscle growth and recovery and maintain lean muscle mass during periods of rest.

They also decrease inflammation and speed up wound healing.

CWI can also be considered a non-pharmaceutical support for conditions such as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis.

What should I wear in an ice bath? How is the ice bath cleaned?

Standard underwear or swimwear would be considered suitable for ice bath and CWI participation.

  • The Odin ice baths at Ice4Life have a fully automated and inbuilt sanitisation and filtration system.
  • The ice baths comprise an ozone generator and contains a 50-micron filter to keep the water clean and sanitised.
  • Odin ice baths are designed to run continuously 24/7, keeping the water circulating for crystal clear hygienic ice baths and CWI.
  • Furthermore, the ice bath water and filters are changed on a regular basis to maintain strict hygiene standards and to allow servicing.

Infra-Red Saunas FAQ’s

How often can I use the sauna?

This is an individual ever changing personal choice, motivated by your health and wellness goals and your fitness level at the time of use.

A good starting point is 2-3 times per week to gauge the benefits and see how good you feel.

Recommended sessions are up to 45mins depending on tolerance and temperature.

20mins is a recommended starting point but can vary depending on tolerance and temperature.

Usage is flexible and should be individually fine-tuned, specific to your health goals.

Like exercise, using saunas in your weekly routine may provide the best results.

Our saunas can accommodate two people.

Am I being EMF (electromagnetic fields) exposed?

Clearlight Saunas are amongst the industry’s safest, and the ELF (extremely low frequency) levels are 3-5 times below the safety threshold.

The True Wave, far infra-red and full spectrum infra-red heaters are the safest and most effective available and Clearlight Saunas are the only infra-red saunas that cancels EMF and ELF out.

All Clearlight saunas provide the lowest and safest ELF and EMF levels across the market, bar none.

Your Clearlight sauna seating position on testing shows an EMF level of 0mg, the EMF level at the heater direct is generally 1mg or less.

What is the difference between infra-red saunas and traditional saunas?

Infra-red saunas project infra-red waves that penetrate your cells, increasing your body temperature at a cellular level.

This method of raising body temperature offers various advantages such as reduced inflammation, increased immune function, decreased pain, increased Vitamin D synthesis and associated detoxification.

Heat is often more bearable and breathing easier in an infra-red sauna.

In comparison a traditional sauna uses heating elements to artificially heat up hot rocks which heat up the air. Water is often added to the rocks to create steam causing an intense heat which may not be so tolerable.

How is the sauna cleaned?
  • The saunas themselves are made from eco certified Western Red Canadian Cedar which has natural antibacterial properties.
  • The saunas infra-red lighting also provides a natural disinfectant effect.
  • Additionally, after every use the saunas are cleaned using products sourced from Australian Organic Products to ensure and maintain strict hygiene standards.
Should I consult a medical doctor prior to using an infra-red sauna?

Please refer to Terms and Conditions with regard to medical conditions.

If you are hesitant and uncertain about infra-red sauna use, consulting a doctor is recommended to ensure personal safety and usage.

What to bring? Are there showers? What to wear?

We provide mineral water, towels, shower gel/body wash, phone charging capacity and a hair dryer. Most people like to bring their own towel and water.

So just bring yourself, a smile and anything you think you may need.

We provide 1 shower per private room so please factor in usage if in pairs.

Showering after a sauna can lower your core temperature from the highs of the sauna. Conversely, core temperature can stay raised for up to an hour if you do not shower.

We recommend standard underwear or beachwear for sauna usage.

Loose clothing is advised afterwards, as you may still sweat for a time, post sauna.

Contrast Therapy – FAQ’s

What is contrast therapy?

Also known as contrast training and hot-cold contrast training, contrast therapy is a therapeutic technique that involves alternating between hot and cold treatments to promote various physiological effects.

Its use can be traced back to various ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Egyptians Greeks and Romans.

These cultures recognised the therapeutic benefits of contrasting temperatures on the body and incorporated them into their healing practices.

It is commonly used in sports medicine and rehabilitation settings to accelerate recovery, reduce inflammation and boost circulation.

How it works:

Contrast therapy involves alternating a persons’ exposure to and between, hot and cold modalities.

At ice 4life this would be a hot shower and/or a sauna and the cold-water temperatures of an ice bath.

The temperatures of the hot and cold modalities, the duration and number of cycles can vary, relevant to the individual’s tolerance and the desired effect/outcome.

Phase 1 – Hot shower or sauna – approximately 3 to 5mins (subject to adjustment) – blood vessel dilation, blood flow increase, relaxation.

Phase 2 – Ice bath – approximately 1 or 2mins (subject to adjustment) – blood vessel contraction, blood flow reduction, reduced inflammation.

Phase 3 – Repeat – the hot and cold treatments can be cycled multiple times. 2 to 3 times is a recommended starting point. This can be extended based on individual needs.

The hot to cold ratio applied is generally 3:1 and always started hot and finished cold.

Warming up naturally via bodily processes is preferred however, should you need a warm shower please do.

Appropriate loose warm clothing is advised post therapy.

Physiological responses induced by contrast training include:

Vasodilation – the hot shower or sauna causes blood vessels to dilate, causing an increase in blood flow to the affected area.

Vasoconstriction – the cold temperatures of the ice bath water causes blood vessels to constrict and contract, reducing blood flow to the affected area.

Circulatory boosting/pumping – the cycling between hot and cold modalities causes the blood vessels to have a pumping effect. This enhances both your circulation and your lymphatic systems drainage.

Pain relief – alternating between hot and cold temperatures can activate thermal receptors and stimulate endorphin release, giving an analgesic effect.

Inflammation reduction – the cold aspect of contrast therapy may help reduce inflammation via the restricted blood flow with an associated reduction in swelling.

Shock proteins – heat shock proteins (38-41degrees C) and cold shock proteins (37degrees C or less) can be activated.

Under adverse conditions these proteins act to ensure cellular survival and function, playing a crucial role in stress responses at a cellular level.

The bottom line:

Contrast therapy, via the cycling of hot and cold treatments, causes a pumping effect on the blood vessels and the lymphatic system.

Lymphatic system drainage and removal of waste from the circulation is increased.

This waste removal is further complimented by the enhanced delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all areas.

Contrast therapy can reduce inflammation, reduce muscle soreness, promote injury recovery, boost toxin elimination and improve overall physical and mental health.

Whilst contrast therapy is widely used, both professionally and personally to beneficial levels, scientific studies and efficacy evidence are very limited.

Small studies are available but lack any standardised protocols or operating procedures.

Before implementing a new recovery or training technique ice4life recommend consulting a doctor or suitably qualified healthcare professional to ensure you can safely participate in your chosen activity.

Personal Traing – FAQs

Who is personal training for?

Starting at a gym can feel overwhelming. This can be daunting if you’ve never exercised and want to get fit or are returning to fitness after a long time away from exercise.

Personal training at a private facility can offer a way into exercise or back into it without the stress of figuring out what to do and how to do it and away from the crowds of your typical gym or health facility.

A personal trainer has knowledge of exercise, training and how to apply it correctly, safely and to achieve any goals you may have.

Those goals could be weight loss, injury recovery, increased strength, improved confidence, stress relief and as a stepping stone to joining a health and fitness centre or gymnasium without the need for a personal trainer.

The bottom line is whether you are a fitness professional with specific needs or simply someone who wants to improve their health and fitness, a personal trainer could be just the motivation you need.

Ho does it work?

At ice4life we have a small, private, fitness studio for 1 to 1 personal training.

Your first appt is a confidential health and fitness appraisal to get to know you and find out where you are health and fitness wise.

This will include past and present exercise and sporting history, medical conditions past and present, injuries past and present and an insight into your dietary habits.

Your ideas and background are discussed, and that information is used to formulate an exercise programme going forward, that fits in with your lifestyle, routine and goals.

Your exercise programme is scheduled and the exciting journey with your personal trainer begins.

Please contact our office with any queries and we will be in touch soon.

What do I bring?

This one is very simple. Just bring yourself and wear some suitable, supportive exercise/gym wear.

We have cold water on site. Feel free to bring your own water bottle or similar.

We also provide towels if needed. Feel free to bring your own.

There are no shower facilities with the personal training so please factor this into your appt.

Showers only available with sauna/ice bath bookings.

Loose jewellery to be removed prior to appt.

Minimal make up is advised.

How long are sessions and how many times should i go?

Personal training appts are 60mins long. They make occasionally run over by a few mins but will not be less, unless necessary.

How many times you should book a personal training appt is subjective to personal circumstance and will be discussed at your initial consultation.

Booking 1 x per week or 2 x per week is popular but there is no set requirement.

At ice4life we prefer to individually tailor to the individuals’ needs and will strive to provide the best path forward based on your overall situation and goals.

This could mean 2 x per week or 1 x per fortnight. The initial health appraisal is where your information is discussed, and your programme design begins.

Programmes are subject to change and adjustment at all times.

Parking is available at location.

If you have any medical conditions past or present, injuries past or present, or doubts about your physical and mental health, it is recommended that you consult a doctor or suitably qualified medical professional to ensure you can safely participate in the services and facilities provided by http://www.ice4life.com.au.
